Certified Organic Coffee Roasters

To qualify for organic coffee labelling, coffee roasters and farmers must be certified and meet certain standards.

  • No synthesised pesticides or any prohibited chemicals can be used in the previous 3 years
  • Only natural pest control and prevention measures can be used
  • Sustainable crop rotation must be incorporated to prevent nutrient loss in the soil
  • Inspections and lab testing must be passed before the coffee is made available for commercial use
  • Annual audits for packaging, roasting criteria and recall must be passed

Health Benefits of Organic Coffee

  • Organic coffee is rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals, enhancing immune system health.
  • Only less than 5% of the world's coffee production is organic.
  • Organic coffee production faces challenges, including low yield levels, mainly due to the impacts of climate change.
  • These challenges lead to higher production costs for organic coffee.
  • Despite these costs, the numerous health benefits make organic coffee a worthwhile choice.

Organic Coffee and Global Change

Worldwide, over 6 billion kilograms of coffee are produced annually, making coffee the 2nd most traded commodity after oil.

To meet this ever-growing demand, farming methods have developed to maximize production but often at the expense of human and environmental health.

The Impact of Conventional Coffee Farming

Conventional coffee is treated with chemicals, fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, and insecticides. These have a negative effect on the environment and farmers who grow the coffee.

Organic Coffee is Eco Friendly

With organic coffee, no synthesized fertilizers or chemicals can be used in growing or production, which means cleaner beans, air, land, and water. The organic process involves the prohibition of synthesized fertilizers and chemicals in growing or production, leading to more environmentally friendly products.

Innovative Practices in Organic Farming

Coffee pulp and chicken manure are often used as organic fertilizers, but some farmers are experimenting with different organic matter such as coconut husks to constantly improve quality in a competitive market.

Organic Coffee Farming and Climate Change

Organic coffee farms help in fighting climate change by emitting less carbon than conventional farms. This section contrasts the differences between conventional and organic coffee farming methods and their respective impacts on the environment.

The Role of Forested Farms in Climate Resilience

These forested farms are better equipped to handle unusual weather patterns resulting from climate change. The shaded environment not only protects the local ecosystem but also contributes to the quality and flavor of the organic coffee.
