Health Benefits of Organic Coffee

Organic coffee is full of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals that boost our immune systems. Less than 5% of the coffee produced worldwide is organic.

Low levels of production and the difficulties of lower yields from the constant battle of climate change mean the cost of production is higher but with all the added benefits, we feel its worth it.

Benefits of Going Organic to Global Climate Change

Worldwide, over 6 billion kilograms of coffee are produced annually making coffee the 2nd most traded commodity after oil. To meet this ever-growing demand, farming methods have developed to maximize production but often at the expense of human and environmental health.

Conventional coffee is treated with chemicals, fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides, fungicides and insecticides. These have a negative effect on the environment and farmers who grow the coffee.

With organic coffee, no synthesised fertilizers or chemicals can be used in growing or production which means cleaner beans, air, land and water.

Coffee pulp and chicken manure are often used as organic fertilizers but some farmers are experimenting with different organic matter such as coconut husks to constantly improve quality in a competitive market.

Organic coffee farms help in fighting climate change by emitting less carbon than conventional farms.A lot of conventional coffees are grown from hybrids developed to flourish in the open sun. Vast swathes of forest are cleared to grow the coffee, destroying the wild ecosystems of flora and fauna. Most organic coffee is grown under the shade of tree canopies providing a home for the wild plants and animals.

These forested farms are better equipped to handle unusual weather patterns resulting from climate change.
