About Mocha Java Organic - 2022 & 2024 Great Taste Award Winner

2022 great taste award winner

Chocolatey with delicate citrus notes, earthy, Bold & Punchy Body.

Mocha Java is said to be the World’s oldest coffee blend. In olden days, coffee beans from Yemen where coffee has grown since the 15th century were shipped in the wooden hulls of sailing ships of sailors at the great Yemen port of Mocha [Mokha]. This port was one of the world’s busiest locations at the time because it was the primary sea port for the sea route to Mecca.

Many of these sailors arriving at the port of Mocha were coming home from Java Island, and so this is how the traditional coffee blend of Mocha and Java coffee beans occurred, a happy accident of history that produced this coffee blend that is still prized today.

Mocha Java Coffees Today

Mocha Java coffee traditionally includes one part Mocha coffee to two parts Indonesian Java Arabica coffee. This traditional formula is increasingly rare in today’s world coffee market. Many modern day blends of Mocha Java, instead of using Mocha and Java, substitute other coffees for both the Yemen Mocha and the Java Arabica. This may be done with good intentions to mimic the classic Mocha Java taste, even using finer coffees such as an Ethiopia Yirgachefe or another bright (high acidity) coffee instead of the Mocha or another fine Indonesian coffee, or another full and round coffee for the Java, and also altering the proportions.

Well deserved Award Winning Java - Quite an Experience

This is not the kind of coffee I generally go for - but as I gradually rotate around the organic coffees at McCabes - I thought I would give it a try.

And yes - it is worthy of the various awards it has won. The package taste notes says Toffee - Red Berries. I also note it has an intensity rating of 3.

I guess we all have different palates - I would give the intensity a 4. And the taste: Yes kind of toffee chocolate like - and the red berries are there in the background if you really take care to taste it.

It feels velvety and luxurious in the mouth - rich and rewarding.

I made an espresso which was delicious but mainly milk based espressos - it makes for an amazing flat white. It is very different to what I would normally drink but it was well worth the experience.

I did try a V60 filter coffee which I did not love - but I guess it is just the wrong kind of coffee for that.

This really is speciality coffee and I would recommend a try even if just for the experience.
