About Monsoon Malabar Single Origin

A strong, intense coffee which works best in espresso based drinks but many like this as strong cafetiere and filter coffee.

Nestled in the lush green hills of the Western Ghats, lies a coffee-growing region known as Manjarabad. Located in the southern state of Karnataka, the region boasts altitudes ranging between 900 to1,200 meters above sea level. Manjarabad is also home to the renowned Manjarabad Fort, a star-shaped architectural marvel built in the 18thcentury.

Rumour has it that coffee was brought into India 500 years ago by Baba Budan, a Sufi saint who brought back no more than seven coffee beans from his pilgrimage to Mecca and planted them on the hilly slopes of what is now called the BabaBudan Giri range of the Western Ghats in Chikmagalur, Karnataka. It is the birthplace of Indian coffee and the core coffee production district.

Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu are the three main regions where 90% of the coffee is produced. In the early days of trade when coffee was shipped from India to Europe, the coffee was stored below the water line, in a humid atmosphere, because the wood was not airtight. By the time the coffee reached Europe, the beans had changed colour from green to pale gold and nearly doubled in size by gaining moisture. This change also led the coffee to develop a softness and mute acidity. As demand for this kind of coffee grew, the monsooning process was developed. On the west coast of India, the coffee is spread out evenly on the floors of the open warehouses, where the beans are exposed to monsoon winds and rain for three to four months. The beans are regularly raked and moved around, receiving enough ventilation and soaking up plenty of moisture.
