Rung’eto Cooperative Society is based in Kirinyaga, Kenya. The society now operates with three factories namely Kii, Karimikui, and Kangoi. Issac Mugo is in charge of the Rung’eto Cooperative Society which was among the highest paying cooperatives in Kenya in 2023. They paid Sh118.6 per kilogram of coffee delivered to their factories. Depending on a farmer’s production, the factories usually offer advance payment ranging from Sh50 and Sh70 to cater for basic needs such as education, food, and medical expenses. “A lot more farmers are expecting a standard pay so they can go back to farming,” Isaac says. Even with competition from avocado and macadamia farming in the area, Isaac claims that farmers from his cooperative society have been enticed to stick in coffee farming because of good payment. “The farmer is not interested in anything else beyond good payment,” he adds. The farmers confidently approach the market with their premium grades and sell their produce to the highest bidder. The management of Rung’eto Cooperative Society is looking for secure a Guaranteed. Minimum Return for their produce which they believe will encourage farmers to work even harder on their farms. “We are angling to start selling our coffee directly to overseas buyers since we have a very unpredictable and inconsistent market offers at the Nairobi auction,” Isaac says. In addition, Isaac says that good payment has improved the livelihoods of tens of farmers from the cooperative. “Previously, you would witness a lot of mud houses around, but coffee and improved payment has turned things around here for the better as far as eradicating poverty goes,” he said.
